After graduating in medicine from The University of Auckland Chris worked in general medical positions in New Zealand and undertook postgraduate diplomas in obstetrics and in child health before working as a District Medical Officer in Papua New Guinea for almost 8 years. Subsequently he trained in Public Health Medicine and was a consultant in public health medicine with the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (1997-2004) prior to joining the Clinical Trials Research Unit in 2003 as a Senior Research Fellow.
In 2005 he was appointed Associate Director, and in 2009, Director.
Chris has a Master in Public Health degree and a PhD in Community Medicine from the University of Auckland. His current research is focussed primarily on tobacco control and innovative smoking cessation interventions research (e.g the ASCEND, RELIQ, SONIQ, Te Piri Pohotanga trials) but he also has a wider interest in using rigorous methods (particularly randomised trials) to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of novel interventions on the leading risks to health, including physical inactivity, poor nutrition, elevated blood pressure and cholesterol.
Chris chairs the Heart Foundation’s Public Health Strategic Advisory Group and is a Board member of the Foundation. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a Fellow of the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine, a member of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco and a member of the International Union Against TB and Lung Disease.
